THE RISE OF TOURISM
Until the 50's Livigno could only offer summer tourism due to the road
closures. Only the most enthusiastic, generally Germans, would come up to Livigno by
sledge to enjoy the vast extent of virgin snow.
The winter of 1952 saw the road to Bormio being opened for the first time. The first
skilift was opened in 1958 and finally in 1964 the "Munt La Schera" tunnel was
opened up making Livigno accessible to tourists coming from the North via the Engadin and
the South and North East Italy via the Brennero motorway system. Tourism was now truly
born.
1964: 4 hotels and one skilift.
1996: 98 hotels with 4.700 beds, 880 apartments let weekly, 30 skilifts, 110 kms of
piste, 50 kms of cross country.
